FG Deploys Policemen To Federal Universities, Says ASUU Must Resume On Dec 4

The Federal Government has directed the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, to deploy policemen to all federal universities in the country in its bid to ensure resumption of academic activities in universities on or before December 4.

It was learnt this development was disclosed at an emergency meeting the Federal Government held with all vice-chancellors of federal universities at the National Universities Commission building in Abuja on Friday. The Acting Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, and the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof Julius Okojie, were also at the meeting.

Though Friday’s meeting was held behind closed door, a source at the meeting who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the press, told Saturday PUNCH that the Federal Government directed the IG to draft policemen to federal universities to prevent members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities from disturbing some of their members that might want to resume work in line with government’s directive.

The meeting, we learnt, also discussed other modalities for calling off the bluff of ASUU whose members have been on strike for over five months.

The Friday meeting began at 9am and lasted for two hours. Part of the meeting’s deliberations, we gathered, also centred on how to recruit new lecturers to fill the space of ASUU members who might refuse to obey government’s directive. Also, the vice-chancellors were directed to call students back to campus on Sunday in preparation for academic activities which should start on Monday.

Wike, had on Thursday ordered lecturers to resume duties on or before December 4 or face being sacked summarily by the Federal Government.

It was learnt that already Okojie had been mandated to start the process of recruiting new lecturers by placing vacancy adverts in international journals and media.

Also, the vice-chancellors were directed to open registers in their institutions where ASUU members that resume work would sign so that those who failed to resume could be sacked.

It was also learnt that the Federal Government was planning to adopt the Ghanaian method where lecturers were asked to re-apply for their jobs after two years of strike.

“Not all lecturers are members of ASUU. Most professors don’t belong to the union, people think every lecturer in public university is a member of ASUU, which is not true. Government means business this time around and it is going to call off the bluff of ASUU,’’ the source explained.

Nigerian universities are currently in need of at least 30,000 lecturers because of acute shortage of lecturers in the university system..

There are also indications that the Federal Government and university lecturers may be heading for a clash as the December 4 deadline given by the Federal Government for the lecturers to return to work is also the date set aside by ASUU to bury a former President of the union, Prof. Festus Iyayi.

The Federal Government had claimed it decided to go tough on ASUU because the union made fresh demands in its letter to the government as a condition for calling off the lingering strike action.

ASUU had demanded payment of the four-month salary arrears of its members from July when the strike commenced and the release of N200bn that President Goodluck Jonathan promised to inject into the university system within the next two weeks.

The union also said the agreement reached between it and the Federal Government should be signed by the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation.

Though the President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Faggae, refused to pick his calls and also did not respond to a text message sent to him on the latest development, the Enugu State Police Command confirmed that its men had been directed to man universities to quell any protest that might result from the Federal Government’s order on lecturers to resume work on or before Wednesday.

The command told the press that police officers had also been directed to be stationed at the universities to forestall any disturbance from various groups or lecturers on Monday.

“There is no cause for alarm and we are combat ready in the event of any violence or disturbance,” the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said.

Also, the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Etim Dickson, confirmed that the police had been mandated to provide security for lecturers that want to resume work against molestation by their other colleagues, who may not want them to do so.

“We are not going to their houses to force them to come and teach in the universities. Even though the Federal Government has taken a stance, we are not in the military rule to molest lecturers,” he said.

But reacting to the latest development, the Chairman, ASUU, UNIBEN chapter, Emina-Monye, said ASUU members were not bothered about government’s latest strategy.

He said, “They can go ahead with that. We are not perturbed. Let them call the police; let them advertise vacant positions and see how many international scholars will want to accept what Nigerian university lecturers are taking- let them go ahead.”

Governor Adams Oshiomole Apologizes For Outburst On Widow

After a video of him shouting at a widowed woman to “go and die” went viral on social media, Edo State governor Adams Oshiomole has tendered an apology for his actions. The Governor, however, noted that he made the comments in anger.

Oshiomhole’s apology was made when the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), paid him a courtesy visit in Benin. He noted that though the challenge of modern times had bestowed on the shoulders of some women and single mothers the status of bread winners of their homes, such should not be used as an accuse to flout the laws.

The Governor urged the Muslim women leaders to use their offices to propagate the essence of healthy living among children and women in the nation and the need to maintain proper sanitary conditions in their neighbourhoods.

Oshiomhole lamented that the challenge of widowhood had also exposed children to different temptations, adding that there was the need for society to be careful, to avoid unwittingly creating more problems for the nation. He noted that money was not the best thing that guaranteed ones happiness, “but honesty and selfless service.

The Governor added that if Muslims and Christians were adequately committed to their religious doctrines, the world would be a better place. He urged the women to propagate the message of Islam through the nooks and crannies of the nation, and to also inculcate the values of honesty in their followers.

Oshiomhole, however, assured the association of government’s support in ensuring that its present leadership made remarkable progress and also consolidated on the successes of their predecessors.

Comedian Julius Agwu sues Etisalat for N100m

Comedian Julius Agwu has dragged telecoms giant Etisalat to court for blocking his business line. He is demanding for N100million as compensation for jobs lost, contact lost, for the inconveniences, and for being mistreated by Etisalat staff. Below is a statement from his lawyer, Festus Keyamo...

We are solicitors to Mr. Julius Agwu, one of Nigeria's most sought after entertainers (hereinafter referred to as "our client") and on whose behalf we write.
Our client is the owner of the Etisalat GSM phone number 08189555555, which he uses as his business line. On the 8th of October, 2013, our client travelled out of the country and returned on the 17th of the same month. Upon his return, he tried severally to make calls from the aforestated GSM line but same could not connect. Not only could he not make calls, he also could not receive calls on the said GSM line. This continued for some days until he got a message that his line had been blocked by the network provider.
Sequel to the above message, our client promptly visited your Abuja office at Hilton to report the matter. He was attended to by one Miss Joan, who informed him that somebody swapped his line. After our client successfully answered the security questions put to him, he was informed that his line had been restored, but the credit balance on the line was not returned.

Surprisingly, our client's aforestated line was blocked again after he left your said Abuja office. Once again our client visited your office at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja, Lagos to lodge a complaint, but painfully, nothing was done about it.

However, after sometime, our client was invited for a meeting at your head office in Lagos on the 14th of November, 2013 which he duly honoured. Present at the meeting (in addition to the officials of your organization) was Mr. Mobolaji Okusaga, the Managing Director of The Quadrant Company, in his capacity as media agents/managers for Etisalat Nigeria.

At the end of the meeting, our client was told for the umpteenth time that they would get back to him, which they again failed to do.

LOSS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

It cannot be over emphasized that your actions of unlawfully blocking and/or swapping our client's line occasioned loss of business opportunities to him. As you are aware, our client as one of the most sought after Nigerian entertainers needs his phone line to be easily accessible to keep his business going. It therefore goes without saying that our client has lost some business opportunities as a result of your actions.

TAKE NOTICE that we have our client's firm instruction to demand and hereby demand the sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) as compensation for the loss of business opportunities and the inconvenience caused our client by reason of your unlawful and unjustified blocking and/or swapping of our client's Etisalat GSM phone line.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that in the event that you fail, refuse or neglect to accede to our above stated demand within seven (7) days from the receipt of this letter, we shall be compelled to set in motion against you, all legal machineries necessary to obtain legal remedy for our client.

Thank you.
Yours sincerely,

FESTUS KEYAMO, ESQ.

BREAKING NEWS: FG Gives ASUU 1 Week Ultimatum To Call Off Strike

Today the Federal Government gave the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), one week ultimatum to call off the lingering lecturers' strike.

The acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja.

It was gathered that the government has also ordered Vice Chancellors of Universities to declare the jobs of the striking lecturers vacant as from Wednesday, December 4.

Wike called the ongoing varsity teachers' strike as "act of sabotage."

"The continuation of the strike despite several meetings, especially with President Goodluck Jonathan is an attempt by the union to sabotage all efforts by government to address the issue," he said.

The minister disclosed that government has met all its commitments and obligations with respect to the agreement.

According to his words, government took the decision to reopen the universities following ASUU's new conditions which are "not tenable. "

His words:

"On November 4, 2013 President Goodluck Jonathan met with ASUU executive, labour union leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), where all the issues were resolved and firm commitments made to address the lingering crisis. "It is noteworthy that Mr. President's gesture was more than sufficient to guarantee the commitment of government to address all issues raised at the meeting with Mr. President.

"At the end of the meeting, the ASUU team promised to convene a meeting of its National Executive Committee to present the resolutions reached and report back by Friday November 8, 2013. It is unfortunate that while travelling to attend the NEC meeting in Kano, we lost a key member and former President of the union, Prof. Festus Iyayi.

"Government sympathizes with the family of the late Iyayi and ASUU. It is however amazing that three weeks after the meeting with Mr. President, ASUU responded by giving new conditions for suspending the five month old strike. I have never seen anywhere in any country where you sit down with Mr. President.

"That is the highest level of discussion. If you cannot believe Mr. President then who else will you believe?"

"Any academic staff who fails to resume on or before the 4th of December, 2013 automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution

"Vice-Chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions.

"The National Universities Commission is hereby directed to monitor the compliance of these directives by the various institutions.

"The Federal Government has met all its Commitment and obligations with respect to the FG/ASUU 2009 Agreement. We appeal to all stakeholders to appreciate the position of Government which is in the best interest of our dear country."

ASUU Strike Update: Union Says Strike Will End in 24 Hours, If Government Relents

The ASUU strike continues in 2013, but the latest update is that the union says the strike can end at any time within 24 hours–if the federal government relents and agrees to the union’s three demands.

The union presented the demands to the government on Tuesday in the form of a letter to Minister of Education Nyesom Wike.

Wike called the demands “outrageous,” and alluded to them being beyond what the two sides had agreed to in the intense meeting held about two weeks ago.

Now the ASUU responds, saying that Wike’s comments about the demands being beyond the agreement “untrue” and “an absolute lie,” reported the Daily Post.

“We are not making fresh demands,” said Dr. Ademola Aremu, treasurer of the union, reported the Daily Times. ”In fact, the National Executive Council of the union would have suspended the strike but the concern of our congresses is that many of the things agreed with the President, during the November 4 meeting, were not included in the letter signed by a permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mark Nwobiala.”

ASUU claims that it only wants the resolutions reached at the meeting endorsed and signed by a reputable government official.

Aremu did praise the intervention of Jonathan but said some of the resolutions reached were not contained in the letter sent to the union.

The conditions outlined by the union are:

1. Commitment from the President that any review or reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement will not substantially affect the pact which is the cause of the ongoing strike;

2. Immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and allowances of varsity teachers without victimization; and

3. A written commitment from the President that the Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to the funding of universities for the next four years.

Kidnappers abduct ex-footballer’s father, demand N50m

Kidnappers have seized the 83-year-old father of a former Super Eagles player, Chikelue Iloenyosi, in Njikoka Local Government, Anambra State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, James Iloenyosi, was on his way back from the church on Monday when he was abducted by the assailants.
A family source said the kidnappers blocked Chikelue father’s car and then put him into another car before speeding off.
He said, “On Monday, Pa Iloenyosi (James) was driving home from morning Mass when some men in a Toyota Camry blocked his Peugeot 504 and pulled him out of his vehicle. They subsequently put him inside their own vehicle and sped off.
“After organising a search party without success, we called his son on the telephone to inform him of the development.
“The following day, the kidnappers called us with the victim’s telephone and demanded N50m ransom. Family members have been trying to negotiate with them but they have refused to collect anything less.”

When our correspondent contacted Chikelue on the telephone, he confirmed the development.
He said, “I received a telephone call from the village that my father had been kidnapped. Later we were able to recover his vehicle, but my father’s telephone was switched off for the rest of the day. It was the following day that the kidnappers called with their demand.”
He said the family was still meeting to plan the next cause of action, while negotiation was ongoing with the kidnappers.
The former Nigerian defender said the incident was more painful as his father’s twin brother had only recently died.
“We have been begging these kidnappers but they have been threatening to kill my father if we did not pay. That money is just too much,” he said.

FG to stop kerosene subsidy in 2014

There are indications that the Federal Government will stop kerosene subsidy in 2014 bringing to an end a scheme that has been widely criticised as corrupt and controversial.
Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that no provision was made for kerosene subsidy in the N4.77tn 2014 budget proposal presented to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Ministry of Finance sources, who gave the hint, said the budget proposal did not make any provision for kerosene subsidy.
The Federal Government spent N634bn to subsidise the retail price of kerosene in the past three years.
The Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Mr. Dakuku Peterside, who recently condemned this as wasteful spending, also said N110bn was spent on kerosene subsidy in 2010, N324bn in 2011 and N200bn in 2012, which came up to N634bn in the three years.
He said, “In the year 2010, we spent N110,068,533,988 to subsidise kerosene. This is not the cost of kerosene but the cost of subsidising the product alone. In 2011, it got worse and the government spent N324,089,961,319 on kerosene subsidy. Although we have yet to reconcile this, we spent N200bn in subsidising kerosene in 2012.

“So, in three years, we have spent N634bn subsidising kerosene. This is one third of what we spend in a year on capital budget.”
Despite the huge spending on Kerosene subsidy, the masses could not, until recently, buy the product at the regulated price of N40.90k per litre.
They had settled for alternative sources of energy such as firewood, charcoal, sawdust, electricity and gas.
However, this has recently changed as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, through the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, has been selling kerosene at N50 per litre.
Commenting on this, the President, Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association, Mr. Dayo Adeshina, said it would be a welcome idea if kerosene subsidy could be stopped by the government.
He said, “Government needs to take a conscious decision to drive a mass shift from kerosene to LPG as it was done in Indonesia. The Indonesian government took a conscious decision to stop kerosene subsidy, which was gulping $9bn a year. They found that they would only need to invest $2bn in cylinder and cooking stoves to save $7bn.
“We need to get to that level when we will consciously shift from kerosene to LPG and that can only happen with the right government policy.”
Adeshina argued that the N634bn spent on kerosene subsidy had little impact on the masses, saying it enriched only a few people.

ASUU STRIKE: Fresh Demands From ASUU Shatter Students’ Hope

With the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerian's thought the resumption was as good as sealed. The President had promised the ASUU leadership that his administration would from 2014 inject N1.1tn into the university system. He also promised to release another N100bn for the sector in the remaining part of this year.

But the report on Monday that the striking teachers were demanding the payment of their salaries, among other requests, seems to have thrown a spanner in the works.
One of the resolutions reached by the striking teachers, who ended their National Executive Council meeting in Kano on Friday, our correspondent gathered, is that the FG must show enough commitment, especially with regard to the payment of their four months’ salaries.

They are also seeking the immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offer by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100bn this year.

But even as lecturers make these demands, analysts look at their requests with mixed feelings. For instance, an education consultant, Dr. Olusegun Omisore, notes that the auto accident, which killed a former ASUU President, Dr. Festus Iyayi, must have contributed to the latest demands by the striking lecturers.

According to Omisore, the controversial circumstances in which Iyayi died must have prompted the lecturers to take this position.

Iyayi died in an auto accident involving the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, and an ASUU vehicle on his way to Kano to attend the NEC meeting penultimate week.

For a Lagos lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, the lecturers have no need to nurse any fear about the possibility of getting their salary arrears. The action they engaged in trying to revamp the nation’s tertiary institutions, he says, is a legitimate one before the law.

He states, “The FG has no justification to attempt to use the no-work, no-pay policy to further drag on the debate. Strike is one of the legitimate instruments workers use to fight their cause. The cause the lecturers are fighting is not a private one, but for the public good. What they are seeking is for the good of the university system and the nation.

“Therefore, if they are punished for this, it will be against the tenet of fair industrial practice. Again, that policy will not work in this country. It is just a decorative part of industrial law.”

As Aturu holds this view, Omisore is asking the teachers to temper justice with mercy. He notes that the worst hit in the crisis are the students.

Omisore says, “On the bottom rung of the ladder are the students. ASUU members should not forget that students are involved in all of this. The damage done to their psyche and the future of Nigeria is enormous. Since the FG has shifted ground, the striking teachers should try to meet the the government at the middle road.”

He also appeals to ASUU members to exploit the support they have earned from members of the public to call off the industrial action.

Like Enoh and Junior, who are disillusioned with the development, a 200-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Oyebanji Omotayo, says he is tired of the strike.

He notes, “I am fed up and tired of staying at home. The only thing I want to hear now is the suspension of the strike. ASUU should resolve all the outstanding issues quickly. I hope the situation is not going out of hand. I implore the FG to do what is needful so that the striking teachers return to classes.”

Similarly, Fadlulah Hammed, a part two English Language undergraduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, says, “The strike at this point has become unbearable. I understand that the striking teachers have put up some fresh demands, but I urge them to consider our plight and call off the action.”

For Suliat Olubisi, a 300-level student of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zari, who claims she has been on campus since the strike begun, it is high time the action was called off.

She says, “Any time I attempt to return home, there is always the rumour that the strike will end. I therefore plead with ASUU members to sheathe their swords, as it were.”

But Dr. Fidelis Okoro, who teaches at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, says the issues at stake are beyond sentiments. According to him, the blame for shunning the classrooms should be laid at the doorsteps of the FG. Their action, he explains, arose because the authorities breached an agreement unanimously signed in 2009.

He adds, “Nobody can blame us for this, if the FG had kept to the agreement in the first place, the strike would not have cropped up at all.”

A British woman has appeared in court charged with conning thousands of pounds from Premiership footballers while working as their “lifestyle coach”.

Claire Duke, 38, is accused of defrauding high-profile clients – including Cardiff City FC striker Peter Odemwingie – out of more than £70,000 over a one year period.

It is alleged Duke received money for holidays and flights from clients but kept the money for herself.

She appeared at Cannock Magistrates’ Court in Staffordshire last Wednesday charged with five counts of fraud and one of theft.

Between September 1 last year and July 10 of this year she is accused of making a total of £71,106.83 fraudulently. Included in the charges is that while Duke was the lifestyle consultant of 32-year-old Odemwingie, she allegedly stole £15,437.67 by using his debit card.

Dressed smartly in a grey dress and black blazer, Duke spoke only to confirm her name and age in court.

ASUU To Call Off strike After Meeting With The President

Nigeria’s striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rose from a two-day National Executive Council Meeting (NEC) on Saturday in Kano with a resolve to keep mum until it met with President Goodluck Jonathan.
President Jonathan is due home on Sunday night, after attending a summit in London with investors. A serious stomach pain forced the president to skip the Thursday opening of the meeting.
ASUU’s meeting was held at an undisclosed venue, away from the ASUU secretariat, NAN reported.
However, a reliable source in the association who spoke on Saturday, in Kano, said: ‘’ASUU has decide to meet with President Jonathan before making whatever decision they took during the meeting public.’’
The source added that 60 per cent of the members wanted the strike called off while the remaining 40 per cent wanted it to continue.
The NEC meeting was billed to hold two weeks ago but was postponed following the death of a former ASUU President, Professor Festus Iyayi in a road accident in Lokoja.
ASUU embarked on a national strike that has shut down all Nigeria’s government owned universities, since July.
The academics wanted government to implement an agreement reached in 2009, that would improve funding for infrastructure in the universities and welfare of the teachers.

7. The decoration of the wedding and reception will be done by Newton and David which is owned by Uche Majekodunmi.
8. The white wedding which will be held in February 2014 will be a destination wedding in the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean.
